Moving Checklist

Before Leaving Your Present Address… Ending/Starting Utilities Order the final reading of: Gas Meter Electric Meter Water Meter Have the transfer date ready when you call any of the following services that may apply:

  • Gas
  • Electricity
  • Water
  • Sewer
  • Trash Removal
  • Telephone
  • Cable
  • Newspaper Delivery
Contact the utility companies in the city to which you are moving to inquire about installation & fees for installation services (also have the dates/times you wish to begin service available):
  • Gas
  • Electricity
  • Water
  • Sewer
  • Trash Removal
  • Telephone
  • Cable
[hr style=double-line margin_top= margin_bottom=] Change of Address Notification Request change of address cards from your post office. Send a card to each of the following that may apply:
  • Magazines
  • Insurance Companies
  • Credit Card Companies
  • Other companies for which you are billed or have accounts with
  • Friends/Family
  • Place of worship or other groups

  • Transfer your bank accounts and any other investments
  • Close any safety deposit boxes
  • Transfer insurance on household goods, personal possessions, and automobiles so they will be properly covered en route to your new home.
  • Arrange sufficient cash or travelers’ checks to cover moving costs until you make new banking connections. (Moving companies usually require cash or certified checks.)
  • Obtain Records
  • Obtain birth records of you and/or your children.
  • Obtain all medical and dental records. Request shot and health records for your pets from your veterinarian.
  • Notify the principal at your children’s school about your intended move.
  • Also, request a letter from your children’s teachers covering their status in school.

  • Leave your new address with your real estate company.
  • Leave all keys to your property with your real estate agent, landlord, or neighbor.
  • If leaving your home vacant, clean out all trash and secure windows, doors, etc. Consider winterizing the home, if necessary. (Inform your real estate agent of any needs or concerns they should be aware of while the house remains vacant.)
  • Check the status of your utilities:
    • Gas
    • Electricity
    • Water
    • Sewer
    • Trash Removal
    • Telephone
    • Cable
  • Have the refrigerator, automatic washer, and other appliances checked by a certified technician. Have the stove serviced and check the pilot light.
  • Check the pilot lights on the hot water heater, incinerator, and furnace.
  • Have your new address changed on your driver’s license and other forms of identification.
  • Note any problems or questions that you were unaware of about your new home. Contact your real estate agent if necessary.
  • Ask the mail carrier if any mail is being held for you and notify the post office of your arrival.
  • Register your automobiles within the time allowed (if you have moved to a different state.)
